本日はロバート＝マリケンさんの出身国でもあるアメリカにまつわるブログを書いていこうと思います。

タイトルにもあるように”ボタンダウン”についてお話指せていただきます。

As the title says, I would like to talk about “button down”.

 

 

 

ボタンダウンとはブルックス・ブラザーズというアメリカの老舗服店が持ち込んだのがルーツとされています。

ポロ競技で選手が風でめくれるのを防ぐために衿を身頃に留めていたのを見てデザインのヒントを得たみたいです。

当時は、ボタンダウンシャツではなく、ポロ・カラー・シャツと呼ばれ、乗馬競技のポロ用に作られた競技シャツでした。

 

Buttondown is said to have its roots in the fact that a long-established clothing store in the United States called Brooks Brothers brought it in.

It seems that he got the inspiration for the design when he saw that the collar was fastened to the body to prevent the athletes from turning over by the wind in the polo competition.

もともと開発した会社がアメリカというのもあり、アイビースタイルの看板商品として1960年代に絶大な人気を集めたボタンダウンシャツは

アメリカを象徴するといっても過言ではない存在になりました。

アイビースタイルとはアメリカ東部のアメリカンフットボールリーグに所属する、八つの名門私立大学の学生から発信され、

1950年代から60年代にかけて大きな流行となったスタイルです。ここを詳しく説明すると話が逸れてしまうのでまた今度。

ボタンダウンにはこのような背景が存在するため、どちらかと言いますと”カジュアル”な存在になります。

最近だとクールビズが夏場は主流で、シャツ一枚でお過ごしの方にとっては便利なものですね。

カジュアルな襟型になるので基本的には結婚式などのフォーマルでルールがしっかりある場では

着用方法としてはネクタイをしてもノーネクタイでも、襟先の2つのボタンは必ず留めておくのが基本です。

ボタンダウンの襟の形状は、襟先のボタンを留めたときに美しい襟立ちを保つデザインになっています。

襟先をボタンで留めないと襟の形が不自然に崩れてしまい、身頃のボタンが浮いて見えてしまう為です。

最近ではあえてボタンを外すこともあるみたいです。

ボタンを外すと、襟周りにやわらかい表情が出てなんともイタリアらしい着こなしができます。

なんでもかんでも外していいというわけではなく、芯地が柔らかいものでしていただくのが雰囲気に合っていると思います。

これはネクタイをした状態の時の話です。

本来ボタンは留めるものなのでそこは忘れずに。。。
